Latonya Jackson, Herron Band Council Member

 

Latonya Amos Jackson is from Lawtell, La. and has seven children and two grandchildren. Latonya is a council member of the Herron Band. Latoyna decided to get involved with the Atakapa-Ishak Nation because she wanted to help to get her ancestors the recognition and respect they earned and deserved. She also wants to ensure that the legacy of the Atakapa-Ishak nation lives on and is carried on proudly by future generations. She received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and worked at Tulane University as a medical research specialist, where she did neurological and cancer research. Latoyna is presently pursuing a PhD in Environment and Evolutionary Biology.

Her goals for the tribe include:

a) Ensuring recognition by the state and federal government

b) Educating herself and fellow tribe members about the history,culture,values, contributions,

and everything concerning the Atakapa-Ishak nation.

c) Helping to build a strong nation and a strong governing body of Atakapa-Ishak people.

d) Bring the Atakapa people back as one.
