Atakapa-Ishak To Be Featured In Book Published By The University Of Nebraska Press

William Sconzert-Hall and Dr. Marcia Haag, a linguist from the University of Oklahoma, are working on a project that will showcase the literature of American Indians from the Southeast. Dr. Haag has been particularly interested in showcasing stories and narratives of smaller tribes in the region. The book itself will be published out of the University of Nebraska Press. It is part of a series, edited by Brian Swan. It will be open to all media, but will be translated into English.

This book is not meant to glorify the linguist and/or the anthropologist involved in the collection. Instead, it is meant to showcase the voices of the people that normally do not get heard by the broader society. It will be respectful and will not print sacred texts or anything the teller or writer deems too personal. Sconzert-Hall and Haag are interested in including the Atakapa-Nation.
Again, the goal of the book is to emphasize the voices of indigenous people and not the voice of the outside scholar, although there will be essays from them.
