Atakapa-Ishak to Participate in Burial of Native American Remains

Members of the Atakapa-Ishak nation will take part in a burial ceremony where Native American remains will be put to rest around noon at the Anahuac Cemetery in Anahuac, Texas. Sheryl Shaw, Chairman of the Chambers of Commerce Historical Commission, informed Chief Chretien that in 2005, a headstone that marked the burial of Native American bones was stolen. Now 9 years later, the headstone is being replaced for free. In addition to the previous bones that were put to rest in the Anahuac Cemetery, Shaw would like to include other Native American bones that are currently in storage at the local museum. Shaw believed that those bones should be buried properly and asked Chief Chretien if he or someone from his tribe could say a few words. Chief Chretien and the Atkapa-Ishak tribe were honored to be called upon to bless the remains and play a vital role in the ceremony. Area college students will attend to watch this historical event.
